Steidl and Domeniconi

Guitarist Pavel Steidl was born in 1961 in (ex-) Czechoslovakia. He studied the guitar in Prague with Milan Zelenka and Stepan Rak. In 1982 he embarked on an international career after winning the first prize in Radio France International Guitar Contest (Paris). In 1987 he made the decision to settle in the Netherlands. Apart from being a guitar soloist, he also composes for guitar. His most popular works are Lambada für Elise and …and You, Too, Go to Ithaca? (both share the same humorist character).

In his recital he often uses period instruments, such as copies of the 19th century romantic guitar, anytime he interprets works of the respective period. Moreover, while playing music, he employs face and body gestures in a very characteristic and striking way in order to enhance the performance of music phrases. In certain works, he exercises the technique of overtone or throat singing, i.e. singing harmonics with the use of the larynx, the pharynx and the oral cavity (cf. the video below).

His discography includes works by Mertz, Coste, Paganini et. al. He teaches in guitar festivals worldwide.

Ο κιθαρίστας Pavel Steidl γεννήθηκε το 1961 στην (πρώην) Τσεχοσλοβακία. Σπούδασε κιθάρα στην Πράγα με τον Milan Zelenka και τον Stepan Rak. Το 1982 ξεκίνησε τη διεθνή καριέρα του αφού κατέκτησε την πρώτη θέση στο Διεθνή Διαγωνισμό Κιθάρας του Radio France στο Παρίσι. To 1987 αποφάσισε να εγκατασταθεί στην Ολλανδία. Πέρα από σολίστας, είναι και συνθέτης για κιθάρα με πιο γνωστά του έργα το Lambada für Elise και το …and You, Too, Go to Ithaca? (και τα δύο με χιουμοριστικό χαρακτήρα).

Στις συναυλίες του χρησιμοποιεί συχνά όργανα εποχής, όπως αντίγραφα ρομαντικής κιθάρας του 19ου αιώνα, όταν ερμηνεύει έργα εκείνης της εποχής. Επίσης, είναι χαρακτηριστικός ο τρόπος που χρησιμοποιεί τις εκφράσεις του προσώπου του αλλά και διάφορες χειρονομίες για να αποδώσει παραστατικά τις μουσικές φράσεις. Σε κάποια έργα ενώ παίζει, χρησιμοποιεί και την τεχνική του overtone singing ή throat singing, δηλαδή τραγούδισμα αρμονικών με χρήση του λάρυγγα, του φάρυγγα και της στοματικής κοιλότητας! Στη δισκογραφία του περιλαμβάνονται έργα των Mertz, Coste, Paganini και άλλων. Διδάσκει σε Φεστιβάλ σε όλον τον κόσμο.

Composer Carlo Domeniconi was born in 1947 in Cesena of Italy. He started learning music at the age of 13. He graduated from Rossini Conservatorio of Pesaro and carried on with composition studies in 1966 at the Berlin University of Arts. In Berlin he worked as music teacher for 20 years. Then he traveled to Turkey, where he dived in the music tradition, attracted by the local culture. In Istanbul he undertook the initiative of founding the first guitar department in the Conservatory. The influence of Turkish music is particularly evident in his most famous work Koyunbaba (meaning shepherd in Turkish). Other important works for guitar are Three studies for the spirit, Sonatina Mexicana, Prana, Circus Music, Water Music, Malamatina and others.

Ο συνθέτης Carlo Domeniconi γεννήθηκε το 1947 στη Cesena της Ιταλίας. Ξεκίνησε μαθήματα μουσικής όταν ήταν 13 ετών. Αποφοίτησε από το Ωδείο Rossini του Pesaro και συνέχισε σπουδές σύνθεσης το 1966 στο University of Arts του Βερολίνου. Εργάστηκε εκεί 20 χρόνια ως καθηγητής. Στη συνέχεια ταξίδεψε στην Τουρκία, όπου εντρύφησε στη μουσική παράδοση γοητευμένος από την κουλτούρα του τόπου. Στην Κωνσταντινούπολη πρωτοστάτησε στην ίδρυση τμήματος κιθάρας στο Ωδείο. Οι επιρροές από την τούρκικη μουσική οδήγησαν στη σύνθεση του διασημότερου έργου του Koyunbaba (βοσκός στα τούρκικα). Άλλα σημαντικά έργα του Domeniconi για κιθάρα είναι Three studies for the spirit, Sonatina Mexicana, Prana, Circus Music, Water Music, Malamatina κ.ά.

Rojas and Barrios

Berta Rojas was born in 1966 in Paraguay. She studied classical guitar with Eduardo Fernandez in Escuela Universitaria de Música of Uruguay. Thanks to the scholarship “Fellow of the Americas” awarded to her by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, she managed to continue her guitar studies on a postgraduate level in Peadoby Institute (John Hopkins University, Baltimore) under the tutelage of Manuel Barrueco. She was twice candidate for the Latin Grammy. She has appeared in important venues such as New York Carnegie Hall, London South Bank Center, Washington Kennedy Center, Dublin National Concert Hall and others. She has recorded a lot and has been honored many times by the Paraguayan State. She is actively involved in the promotion of Paraguayan music and Latin American music in general.

Composer Agustín Barrios  (1885 – 1944) was from Paraguay. When he commenced composition and guitar studies, he used to transcribe works by Chopin, Beethoven and Bach, in order to cultivate his compositional aptitude. So the fact that many influences by those composers are evident in his works doesn’t come as a surprise. His deep religiosity and traditional Latin American music are also important influential factors in his compositional output.

In 1910 he left his native country to give recitals in Argentina. His success was so immense that he returned after 14 years of touring in Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Mexico and Cuba! Later his fame expanded to Europe. He was the first Latin American music personality who was recognized in Europe as a very important guitarista and composer.

Ο συνθέτης Agustín Barrios  (1885 – 1944) ήταν από την Παραγουάη της Αμερικής. Ξεκίνησε να σπουδάζει σύνθεση και κιθάρα και μάλιστα για να εξασκήσει τις συνθετικές του ικανότητες, μετέγραφε έργα των Bach, Beethoven και Chopin. Οι επιρροές αυτών των συνθετών είναι φανερές στα έργα του. Επηρεάστηκε επίσης από το θρησκευτικό του συναίσθημα και από την παραδοσιακή λατινοαμερικάνικη μουσική.

Το 1910 έφυγε από την Παραγουάη για να δώσει συναυλίες στην Αργεντινή, όμως ήταν τόσο μεγάλη η επιτυχία που έλειπε τελικά για 14 χρόνια, κάνοντας περιοδεία σε Βραζιλία, Χιλή, Ουρουγουάη, Μεξικό και Κούβα! Αργότερα έγινε γνωστός και στην Ευρώπη. Ήταν ο πρώτος Λατινοαμερικάνος κιθαρίστας και συνθέτης που αναγνωρίστηκε στην Ευρώπη ως ιδιαίτερα σημαντικός.
